Toxins Lurking in Your Home: Part 3- Where Are They Hiding?

boots 1

Welcome to the third and final part of ‘Toxins Lurking In Your Home’. In February we focused on toxins found in skin care & hygiene products and some safer alternatives. Last month’s focus was on toxins in the kitchen. This month we will focus on other toxins that just haven’t been discussed.

1. Shoes: Soil toxins are typically found inside houses within the first 10-12 feet of an outside door. Our shoes go everywhere. Think about everyplace your shoes have been, then think about the toxins your shoes are picking up.
Toxins Your Shoes May Be Picking Up: lead, fungi, pesticides, pollen, insect parts, dust mites, animal hair, human flakes of skin, ash from cigarettes…just to name a few.
What Can You Do?: Kick off those shoes when you first come in the house.

2. Carpet: Toxins found in new carpeting can cause a number of issues: nerve damage, hallucinations, reproductive issues, and respiratory trouble. These toxins are used in the adhesives, fire retardants, and stain protectors.
Toxins Found in New Carpets: toluene, benzene, formaldehyde, ethyl benzene, styrene, acetone, and many other chemicals that are carcinogens. Carpets will also carry any toxins that have been brought in from shoes.
What Can You Do?: Replace carpeting with tile, wood, or a more natural carpet such as a natural wool.

3. Furniture, Mattresses & Bedding: Toxins from our furniture, mattresses and bedding have been known to cause reproductive issues, neurological issues, delays in development, and potential carcinogens.
Toxins to Look For: formaldehyde, flame retardant chemicals, stain protectors
What Can You Do?: Purchase furniture, mattresses, and bedding made from organic and sustainable materials.

4. Shower Curtain: The common vinyl shower curtain contains toxins that may cause respiratory issues, neurological issues, liver and kidney troubles, headaches, nausea, and loss of balance.
Toxins to Look For: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, and organotins, among many other chemicals.
What Can You Do?: Choose shower curtains made from cotton, polyester, nylon, or hemp.
