As parents, it can be hard to tell if our children are meeting their nutritional needs. It can also be challenging to ensure that our children are getting a good variety of foods as well as the right kinds. The most important thing we can do for our children’s nutritional health, is to make sure they are being fed a healthy diet. This should mainly consist of proteins, lots of vegetables, and good fats such as avocados, coconut products, nuts, seeds, and wild-caught fish. Grains, fruits, and sugars are much less important and should be limited.

However, even with a healthy diet, nutrients may be lacking. Our soil is more nutrient deficient than ever before and with modern living, many of us are spending less time outside. This means less sun and soil exposure, both which are beneficial to our health.

Daily Supplements for Kids
While supplementing is important, the best and primary source of nutrients for our children, and all of us, should be coming from our food. Supplement means to complete, enhance, or add extra. They should not be used as the main source of a nutrient.

1. Probiotic– a probiotic supplement can improve the overall flora of the stomach by adding good bacteria. This aids the digestive system and helps to keep molds, fungi, yeast, and bacteria from developing or growing.

Humans use to get probiotics in their systems by working or playing in the soil (gardening with barehands and feet can be wonderful for this). We can also put good bacteria in our guts by consuming fermented foods such as sauerkraut, something our ancestors were more prone to do. The use of antibiotics and antibacterial soap has also comprised our gut flora.

2. Vitamin D– vitamin D strengthen the immune system, bones, and joints. It helps keep hormones in balance, reduces inflammation, and improves mood.

The best source of vitamin D is sunshine. It is important to be out in the sun everyday for at least 20 minutes, ideally more. Winter months can be challenging depending on where you live. Our modern living also affects our lack of sun expose, which is why a vitamin D supplement is so important.

3. Fish Oil– fish oil helps improve brain function, strengthens the immune system, fortifies joints, improves mood, and improves the health of the skin.

Many of us do not get enough fish in our diet. A daily fish oil supplement can help. Look for a supplement containing smaller fish such as sardines or anchovies. Their toxicity level will be much smaller than that of larger fish.

4. Magnesium– magnesium can improve mood, digestion, cardiovascular health, muscle and joints, focus, and sleep.

Can be taken as an oral supplement or a magnesium spray can be applied to your child’s feet at bedtime. Epsom salt baths are also a great way to supplement with magnesium.

5. Multi-Vitamin & Mineral– for overall wellbeing!

Look for a multi-vitamin & mineral that is specific for kids.
